This is a classic 80s manga and information technology *shows* - think Mad Max but starring peak 80s action movie Stallone, Van Damme, Dolph Lundgren, or Schwarzenegger. The hero is manly and silent, the villains are weird and larger than life, the kung fu is over the top action, the moral lawmaking is absolute. There's not much depth here, merely it's a fun way to spend an afternoon.**Thanks to the creative person, publisher, and NetGalley for a free copy in commutation for an honest review.

Ahh... Fist of the North Star. I remember the time when I was watching the anime series. Back then, good was good and manly and handsome, while evil is just pure evil. Heads explode, bodies explode. Manly human being versus a horde of goons and gangs. That'due south Fist of the North Star. And so it is a neat joy for me to see the manga series gets republished again by Viz Media. This book oozes with heroic manliness that you lot'd grow muscles and go hiya-ya-ya-ya-ya! simply by reading it. Information technology shares the entreatment of Mad Max in its post-apocalyptic flavour, just with fist-fighting and martial arts-ing. It is a very satisfying read to those who just want to take a pretty good gory time.
What Fist of the Northward Star gives me most is that sugariness nostalgia. Nothing beats that feeling that y'all go when yous want to become a child again, living in a simpler time, looking at the mirror and trying the Hokuto moves by Kenshiro.
...more thanThe art's great! Other than Lonely Wolf and Cub (which I absolutely love) I accept little familiarity with Japanese work to really compare it to and that seems like an unfair comparison to me--I don't really recollect comparing (for American examples) Neal Adams and Steve Ditko is really off-white, either--merely I also don't yet have enough of a base of knowledge to effectively judge it intelligently other than to say it'due south higher up competent, imo, and particularly adept in execution when the subject is violence, which OH BOY IS It.
The story is great, classic Mad Max-ripoff (without cars, Ken's a walker) crossed with a bones series of Western/Kung Fu moving-picture show tropes with a surprising smattering of emotionally healthy masculinity on display throughout, which, given the serial' reputation, I was NOT expecting. Thinking I would get post-disaster Hulk Hogan cartoonish manliness I got something a touch closer to a Johnny Cash flavored tormented wanderer variety maculinity and I was pleasantly surprised. These kid sidekicks amend step it up, though. It'southward definitely still a shonen comic, only it's a really solid, if unsurprising, one.
The Viz hardcover is peachy, a solid physical product that has scattered multitone & a few full color pages besides, with original right to left orientation and a short afterward past the original editor. I'll be getting more as they come out in this edition.

If I were to sum up this manga in a single globe, it would be phenomenal. Far and away, information technology is my favorite manga title of all fourth dimension, and if yous're looking for a new serial to outset, I urge you to start here. That beingness said, it's not for anybody. If you're not into incredibly violent and action-oriented series, it's probably not going to win you over. But if that's at all your thing, give this a shot. A few chapters in I recall you'll find y'all're hooked on it. In addition, this is a new hard-bound edition that just started being released, so y'all tin can take the fourth dimension to collect this as they come out.
Fist of the Due north Star has a dystopian Mad Max setting to it which I can't get enough of. The art way is consistently on point and masterfully drawn. Ample amounts of gore likewise, if that's your thing. Not to mention there'due south a damn good story throughout that I don't want to spoil. Check it out, it's my favorite with good reason!

...moreNow, with that in listen, picture a hero who looks like a young Sylvester Stallone (but with his features all stretched out by bad photoshop piece of work) in a sleeveless leather jacket in the centre of a dystopian wasteland.
ALLLLL the bad guys are taller than regular people, j I picked up the first 'affiliate' of this story from the "VIZ Media Sampler Summer '21" and I had to read the rest. OK, imagine this: it's the 1980'due south, activeness movies are everywhere and Mad Max has caught the commonage consciousness.
NOW, with that in mind, motion picture a hero who looks similar a young Sylvester Stallone (just with his features all stretched out by bad photoshop work) in a sleeveless leather jacket in the middle of a dystopian wasteland.
ALLLLL the bad guys are taller than regular people, jacked like hell, and the big bosses are somehow giants. They are either bald, sporting mohawks, or they have the nearly luxurious locks that even Rapunzel would exist jealous of.
THEN the hero's way of fighting involves being able to make his enemies explode from the inside out. Blood and guys everywhere, bones through skin, people literally splitting in one-half lengthwise.
The art from Tetsuo Hara is actually a tale of 2 halves: The telescopic of the cities, the desolation, the particular = all fantastic. The people though...yeesh. They are hard to look at directly and it immediately makes the book feel dated. Some art tin accept a more than timeless feel, but this one doesn't hold up.
Information technology's a very wild ride and information technology feels very much 1980'due south. After this first volume I become information technology and I don't experience compelled to go further, but that doesn't mean someone out there might not really similar this. I'thou glad I read it to have experience this as I've been pb to believe it was once a volume of annotation, but i volume besides told me everything I need to know.

This is 100% a production of its fourth dimension. That's not a diss or calling information technology bad. It feels outdated merely somehow has its charm. I will say, I think the art is great. Some really fucked up kills here. The characters are over-the-top baddies, especially the terminal guy, simply man was he fun to watch.
I'm not certain how far I'd go into reading this serial. I had fun reading it just I besides was drifting every and so frequently wanting some fresh and new but this wasn't really that. Maybe I'll grab volume 2 when it comes out and see but for what it was, was a fun fierce title. A 3 out of 5.
...moreBrutal, harsh, and certainly a manga curiosity. Information technology never holds dorsum information technology's rough and austere feel and information technology's no fairy tale manga either. It also has many elements that reminded me of "Berserk" and "Mad Max", while the violence is truly over the pinnacle. The story'southward result for now was very unexpected and it's hard to say where Ken's story will get, only information technology still shows there's more encarmine activeness coming. ...more thanFist of the North Star takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, where limited resource have led to turmoil among the remaining human populace. In the midst of this chaos is Ken, a warrior who specialises in the powerful martial fine art known as Hokuto Shinken. Every bit he wanders the wastelands of World, Ken uses his techniques to defend the weak and pursue his captive love Yuria.
What'southward initially hitting almost Fist of the Due north Star is the aesthetic of its world. Buronson has previously cited the picture show Mad Max as a major influence on the series, and this is evident from the opening pages lonely. Fist of the North Star'due south world looks barren, often feeling like an endless trunk of clay and sand, but you occasionally can see the remnants of traditional guild. Bandits are ofttimes shown travelling on old motor vehicles, and many civilisations appear to be in the ruins of once larger cities. While this globe has regressed to an primitive land, the hints of the once blissful past still remain, creating a alien all the same fascinating setting for the manga.
Ane of the most memorable parts of this manga is the chief graphic symbol Ken. From his kickoff battle, Ken is shown to be an unstoppable fighter with a strong sense of justice. Ken's dialogue during his fights is also incredibly entertaining, saying memorable lines like "Yous are already dead" earlier killing his foes. Information technology would be easy to view Ken as a stoic protagonist, but as the story develops, we meet that he is heavily driven by his emotions. Ken's strength, as well as his religion in the bonds between people, is fuelled by his attachment to his lover Yuria. Ken volition go out of his way to save strangers from peril, and will mourn those who are lost in violent acts. Ken uses his strength to protect what others wish to erase, making him a compelling lead for the series.
Ken's enemies are often shown to be cruel and ruthless, blindly killing any innocents in their path. What keeps Ken'south battles with these foes interesting is that they'll use a variety of different weapons and techniques to counter Ken'south Hokuto Shinken. That said, the virtually memorable among them is the volume's main adversary Shin, the leader of a cruel gang in the Kanto region and an quondam acquaintance of Ken. Shin uses his Nanto Seiken martial art for his ain cocky-gain, forcing innocent people to get his slaves and pillaging resources from nearby civilisations. While Shin works as a corking foil for Ken, I was surprised that the 2'due south conflict was concluded by the end of this book. This doesn't take away from the overall quality of Shin's character, just it makes me curious about the longevity of future antagonists as well.
So far, the series'south supporting bandage is very small-scale, with the nigh notable members being Bat and Rin. Bat is a young thief who accompanies Ken on his journey. While his cunning personality is entertaining, he'southward primarily relegated to being an audition surrogate during the manga'due south activeness scenes. That said, Bat'due south interactions with Ken are dainty to see, and they showcase more than of Ken's casual demeanour. Meanwhile, Rin is a young girl that Ken saves at the beginning of the manga. Rin is a stark contrast to Bat, being far more timid and innocent. It'due south difficult to say what Rin's larger role in the story will be, as she ends up being absent from a big chunk of this volume. Like Bat though, Rin's character serves to bear witness Ken's personal values and emotional drive. Bat and Rin don't contribute significantly to this volume, but they are pleasant additions nevertheless.
If Fist of the North Star'southward characters and story don't sell you on the series, Tetsuo Hara's artwork surely will. Hara'south attention to detail is impeccable, from his intricate compages and mechanical designs to the distinct appearances of Ken's enemies. This care is also shown in the manga's activity scenes, where Hara's panels emphasise the motion and impact of each attack. Individual fights in Fist of the North Star aren't particularly long, just the pronounced movements of the characters makes them an immersive experience. Information technology'southward crazy to call back that Fist of the North Star was Hara's showtime long-running manga, equally his incredible talent is already on display in these early chapters.
Unfortunately, Hara's artwork is hindered by a problematic decision in this release: the sound furnishings. As with most Viz Media releases, Fist of the North Star'south original Japanese sound effects take been re-lettered into English. That said, the English sound effects have been lettered in a manner that prioritises covering up the original Japanese, while reducing the amount of required art redraws. This leads to individual letters in sound furnishings ofttimes looking warped or arranged in a manner that feels unnatural. While this isn't the only English manga release to have this issue, it's particularly apparent here because the manga'southward original sound effects were heavily integrated into the artwork. The upshot is that the English sound furnishings are well-nigh unreadable at times, and they actively distract you from the actual artwork. At that place's no way of knowing why this decision was made, but If redrawing Hara's artwork was a concern, I would take much rather had this release retain the Japanese audio effects, instead of them being re-lettered in such a haphazard mode.
It'south worth noting that this release of Fist of the N Star is based on the xviii-book "Ultimate Edition" of the series. This means that the manga has some actress additions that weren't nowadays in older releases, including the original color pages and an afterword from erstwhile Weekly Shonen Leap editor Nobuhiko Horie. The physical release is as well a hardcover, with the opening pages having a beautiful sleeky finish. This is easily the best English release of Fist of the N Star, making it a worthy purchase for even the most veteran fans of the series.
Fist of the North Star is a truthful archetype and a must-read for lovers of action manga. Viz Media'due south new release of the series is very impressive and will please both new and old fans alike. There'due south no better time to check out this iconic championship. Thank you Viz, for bringing back the love.

I have read this when I was a teen. I didn't peculiarly like it. Lousy translation and low quality print. I didn't know that it was the pirated version. I but thought Ken was a badass with emotionless confront who kept fighting worse and meaner opponents. iv.2/5Fist of the North Star is as stupid as information technology is legendary, only I'd be a damn liar if I didn't say that it's the best kind of stupid you lot can arrive post-apocalyptic amusement. Heavily inspired by the likes of Road Warrior (blatantly obvious most of all in the rice seeds chapter), Fist of the Northward Star is the answer to the question no i thought to ask: "What if Bruce Lee was thrown into the Mad Max nuclear apocalypse with the ability of god?" What you get is a unique work of insanity, testosterone, giddy melodrama, cornball dialogue, and brutally impossible martial arts; that is frequently imitated yet unmatched--and certainly unsurpassed.
Equal parts bleak and unusually hilarious, this start volume was adjusted into a mid-to-low-budget anime series in the belatedly 80'due south, which is so bad it's practiced. I'm currently working my way through the series, but information technology's repetitive and gets wearisome after a while. I tin only watch through one disc at a fourth dimension in the monstrously huge brick of a complete series DVD prepare containing its 152 episodes on 21 discs. Even so, I noticed that xx-iv episodes in the show just covers virtually nine chapters in the manga--considering of all the filler added by the showrunners. So what nosotros've got here is a classic story the way it was meant to be told, with all the fat trimmed abroad to gift u.s. hungry readers with nothing but lean, mean red meat. The pacing is breakneck; before your head explodes, the book is already read.
Buronsen's dialogue (translated) is cheesy, over-the-tiptop nonsensical switches between tough-guy threats and boasts, and screams of terror, agony, and confusion. Nothing about his writing is subtle or nuanced, but if it were, the manga would exist worse off for information technology. It's a big part of the series' charm.
Tetsuo Hara'south iconic artwork is consistently great and extremely overdramatic, content with oversizing literally every opponent to ridiculous extremes, making them appear equally giants looming over Kenshiro, the OG overpowered badass of the industry. Hara'southward lines are crisp and make clean, his gory fights insane; this latest hardcover edition past Viz is an added plus, with the colour pages and a short editorial about the inception of Fist at the end. I really promise they translate and release the unabridged run this fourth dimension, as information technology has never been completed by any other company before. As a fan of the show and a fan of the superior manga source, I'm fucking stoked for Vol. 2'southward release in September. Fist fans, rejoice.

I watched an episode or two of Fist of the North Star sometime in the belatedly '90s, but it didn't jive with me a the time. This reissue made me determine to try it again, and just, wow. The squad of Buronson and Tetsuo Hara really created some tasty cheese! I promise I mean that as a compliment!
The series follows Kenshiro, a primary of the Hokuto Shinken style of martial arts, on his quest to fight those that make the innocent suffer, and to find his fiancee, Yuria, who was taken by his rival Shin, who is a main of Nanto Seiken. In his travels, Ken ends upward with a tag-along named Bat, a thief that was imprisoned with Ken before they bankrupt out and escaped. Every bit they travel looking for piece of work to do in exchange for food and water, they go along coming across bad guys, and there is much glaring and even more than fighting, usually involving exploding heads and/or other body parts. Finally, they end up in a huge city run by none other than Ken'southward erstwhile rival Shin, known as Male monarch now. Volition Ken finally be reunited with Yuria? Volition he and Shin finally settle their score? Just how much glaring tin the human confront handle? Read and find out!
This is some serious '80s cheesy martial arts manga, and it's so much fun! So much nostalgia hither, even if I jumped on the bandwagon late. There'south a lot of violence, but information technology's so over the top only the most sensitive of readers should be fine. This is a whirlwind of delicious mail service-apocalyptic fighting fun!

A throwback to the over the top violence and farthermost machismo of 80s action movies, Fist of the Northward Star is basically mad max but with an emphasis on martial arts instead of cars and guns. And that's near it. The story focuses on the wanderings of Kenshiro, the weirder of the eponymous Fist of the Northward Star, a martial arts technique that has the user focus all of their energy into the force per unit area points of their enemies. Sometimes this is used to cripple Ken's opponents in some way, just about of the time it'southward used to make their heads explode.
Being a product of the 80s, this is not really anything that hasn't been seen before. Ken is the classic man with no name manner wanderer, the setting is extremely mad max, and the plot lines are fairly standard shonen stuff. But the artwork is bang-up and the stride is fast, meaning yous're never likewise far away from the next bloody action scene. It'south shlock, but entertaining shlock.
